Dear Parents and Whanau,
On Friday 19th May 2023, Aotearoa will become a sea of pink as schools, workplaces and communities join the Pink Shirt Day movement.
Bullying in Aotearoa is a real problem. We have the third-highest rate of school bullying out of 36 OECD countries and 1 in 10 workers feels discriminated against or bullied at work. Those bullied are far more likely to experience mental health issues.
Pink Shirt Day works to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity in all its forms and supporting schools, workplaces and communities to be safe, supportive, kind, welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Birkdale North School is joining the movement, and encouraging our staff and students to wear anything pink. This could be an item of clothing (t shirt, jumper, jacket, etc.) that is pink or has pink in/on it, pink colour in your hair (ribbon, hair tie, head band) even a pink wig if you have one!
We will also be collecting an optional gold coin donation to help support fundraising for Pink Shirt Day on Friday 19th May 2023.
